The Alexis Foundation gets support from 911 Coordinators for Project Safe Net

The Alexis Foundation is working with the state of Florida 911 Coordinators to implement a first response medical awareness program. Through “Project Safe Net”, first responders will know beforehand of a victim’s preexisting medical conditions in the event of an emergency. With this knowledge, a firefighter, police officer or a paramedic will be equipped to handle each situation accordingly, which in turn will help save lives. Director, Erica Kosares of the Alexis Foundation said; “This is very exciting for us all. For the first time ever, we will be able to provide first responders with valuable information about our loved one’s in advance. Florida is the first state to work with us on Project Safe Net. However, we have plans to go nationwide.”

This is how the system works. A family member is registered into a database listing his or her various medical conditions, which may range from Autism to Alzheimer’s, through the Alexis Foundation. The organization then uploads the information into another database maintained by 911 Coordinators. ( Most Florida counties have these capabilities. ) When a call is placed to 911, the operator retrieves the information in the database on the residents of the home where the call originated. Before arriving to a scene, responders will be prepared to handle the complexities of the situation. By setting up this program, the state of Florida and the Alexis Foundation are taking action to help its citizens with medical handicaps, as this project is the first of its kind in the nation.

Project Safe Net is a service intended to help children and adults with disabilities, by aiding emergency responders with the information of a person’s medical conditions. Director, Bruce Thorburn of Lake County Department of Public Safety had this to say about Project Safe Net. “I believe that any additional information that can be provided to an emergency call responder to speed up the call or add response value to the caller, the incident, the injured or the responder( s ) is a great benefit to Enhanced 9-1-1.”

Project Safe Net has a one-time fee, made payable to the Alexis Foundation, of $35.00. The organization will use this money to defer the cost of maintaining the database. Those listed in the database will be allowed access to update his or her information online at any time. The Alexis Foundation will verify this information annually.

Along with the listing, this package includes a shoe tag that includes caregiver contact information and medical information, a wallet /visor card with caregiver contact and medical information.
