Ads for digital cameras make them all look so easy to use, with great photos to be had on every click - so you should focus on these do's and don'ts 10 tips for better pics.

1. The flash range on your point-and-shoot camera is about 12 feet.

Anything photographed indoors more than 12 feet away will be dark. The longer your zoom lens, the more chances you'll have of a dark image.

2. Focus on your subject, then compose or reframe the photo. Just about all cameras sold today have a shutter button with two positions. Part of the way down tells the camera to focus. At this point the camera usually focuses on what is dead centered in the lens. Once focused, the camera usually beeps or a green light flashes, or both. If you are taking a photo of two people standing next to one another and center the subjects first then focus, chances are the camera is going to focus on the wall behind them, and you get a sharp image of the wall and blurry subjects. Focus on one of the subjects first by pushing the shutter button part of the way down. When you see the green light or hear the beep, continue holding the button in the same place but re-center the view finder so both subjects are in the picture. Then push the shutter button the rest of the way down. Don't lift your finger or you'll have to start over with focus again.

3. When taking photos outside, do all you can as the picture taker to keep the sun behind you.

If that is not possible, take your camera out of auto flash and turn on the flash. Keep the flash range in mind.

4. Don't completely fill the frame of your viewfinder with your subject.

Many picture sizes do not coincide with the rectangle that makes up your viewfinder. In many instances, body parts close to the edge will get cropped out partially or completely. Keep your subject at least 7 percent to 10 percent below the top of the frame.

5. Stop using high-speed film for everything.

If you are still using film, 800-speed film on sunny days makes for high-contrast and grainy pictures. Keep 200 for sunny days, 400 for cloudy and 800 for indoors.

6. Kids and cameras don't mix well.

Don't hand your only vacation camera to your 10-year-old.

7. Don't use memory cards as storage.

Get those images off the card at every opportunity you have. Put them onto a longer-term storage device such as a DVD or CD. Also, don't just delete the photos off your card. Reformat the card as well; this preserves its longevity.

8. Don't hold all your used film until you have several rolls to develop.

The latent image on color film slowly shifts color after exposure. After several months, the color may be unrecoverable.

9. If you are flying with film, use a lead bag made for this purpose. Airport X-rays damage unexposed and exposed film.

10. Don't leave your memories in the hands of novices at the pharmacy or discount chain.
